On a sunny Saturday afternoon in January at Holm Lane, Paul Disbury`s mixture of experience and youth took on the farm-hands from Crewe and Nantwich.

A very confused Chris Beckett who was picked to play in the backs was soon called in to prop for the first few scrums due to the late arrival of Mark Barham.

Play was even until half way into the first half when Steve Mason cleared out a ruck to give Parkonians a quick ball which came out to Mark Hillan who went over in the corner for a good try in front Of the home supporters.

The game flowed up and down the very muddy pitch and C & N scored an unconverted try to equal the scores after Parkonians had scored another try which was disallowed by the referee for an earlier offence.

The second half continued as in the same vein, C & N had the upper hand in set scrums but Parkonians marauding forwards always kept the pressure on the opposition.

After an aimless kick through by the C & N fullback which was caught by the very dependable Greg Lindop who then ran through all of the opposition defence to score a superb try under the posts and which he duly converted.

This gave Parkonians more confidence and another well worked move put Karl Whelan in the far corner to make the score 17 - 5.

As the game petered out the referee finally lost patience with Mark Barham and his opposite number after another bout of mud wrestling and gave each 10 minutes to cool down.

A very enjoyable game of rugby with Paul Disbury showing lots of skill at stand off but a collision between Peter Hillan and Steve Blyth led to the former having to get 8 stitches in his forehead but he soon returned to the club for plenty of alcoholic anaesthesia.
