A Summary of the 2006-07 Season
In what has not always been an easy season the club has remained in excellent spirits throughout. The 1st XV under charismatic captain Ben Pearson experienced a mixed season finishing ninth in South Lancs / Cheshire League 3 staving off relegation.
The team was a real mixture of experience, for example Pete Hillan, Martin Varley, Mark Hillan down to Under 19 colts players especially Andy Smith, Matt Dooley, Rob Marnick, Mike Marnick and Sean Salisbury. We also fielded an overseas player our trendy Aussie, Ben Larsson, who is thoroughly enjoying his time with us.
The second team was captained by ex rugby club chairman, Chris Hall, approaching his 40th birthday, that young I hear you all saying!! We competed in the inaugural season of the Merseyside League honouring all our fixtures and even winning some. Well done, Chris, and to all your players young and not so young!
A successful tour at Easter to Gloucester took place and some rugby was actually played! The Douglas league game away became a tour in itself for players and non players alike with fog meaning everyone had to stay on the island for an extra 24 hours. Even Gus ventured away from home!
Our Under 19 colts under captain Andy Smith competed very well in an extremely tough league environment and there were some truly memorable Sunday afternoon games. Well done to all colts- remember this is your club- and many thanks to Dave Smith and family for coaching and managing the team.
A most successful Annual Dinner evening took place on the last Saturday of the season. John Jones from Caldy RUFC was our most entertaining after dinner speaker or should we say joke teller. Captain Ben spoke well and awarded his captain’s prize to young Peter Hillan; Andy Smith was player of the year and Rob Marnick young player of the year.
