Parkonians v Wallasey ~ Sunday 13th November 2011
From Tim Hassall – Under 10s coach
Can I say how Proud I was of all ages groups. Watching the entire club come to a stand still was a great tribute to rememberance day. Well done one and all.
10's vs Wallasey saw some great performances from individuals. The forwards in the Panthers proved a force to be reckoned with Harry and Matt H smashing through the gain line time and time again. Fly Half Jenson dazzled with electric runs and try saving tackles. Ryan Finn proved he can play centre with some great play.
Parkonian Panthers won 4-0. With straighter runs and quicker passing the score could easily have doubled.
The Pumas went behind after just 60 secs of play, then they switched on and dug deep , with brilliant performances from players such as Nathan Bradshaw and Tom Bayley showing the way. The game was in the balance as it switched possession time and time again but a great winning try from Wallasey pinched a result 1-2. Switching on from the whislte, Ball retention and tackling proved the opportunites here .
Nathan Bradshaw gets player of the day in my view. Best game I have seen him play. Well Done!
Parkonians U8 Wirral Festival ~ 30th October 2011
Parkonians squad tuned up full of Halloween party fun at the Wirral festival and immediately saw the size of the pitch; the quality of the opposition and thought………….this is going to be a challenge.
A challenge it certainly was but our willing squad were more than up to it. We played five games and got off to a winning start against Anselmians by 6 tries to 3 with a hatrick from Tom Mcarthen and single tries from speedsters Luke Taylor, Sam Thomas and Harry (I may be the smallest under 8 in the tournament but I can't half run) Hall.
Our second game against Waterloo was equally as productive with two more tries from Tom Mcarthen, another each from Luke and Harry as well as one from Alfie (best sidestep in the business) Brown and we triumphed 5-2.
At this stage we all had euphoric thoughts about taking the tournament by storm but we then came up against an excellent Chester side and lost 5-3 with tries from Sam Thomas; Tom Mcarthen and Matthew Vilder. At this stage our coach was beginning to harbour concerns that the aftermath of the Halloween party (sponsored by Haribo) and the extremely spacious pitch, may drain some of our squad's energy reserves. One thing is sure, it was certainly draining the coach/referee who was finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with a group of 7 year old whippets.
All concerns were pushed aside though following an outstanding comeback against Caldy who had led 3-1 in the second half of our fourth match only to be pegged back to 4-4 with two great tries each from Rhys Hulse and Tom Mcarthen.
The fatal lunch break then arrived and, despite the advice of the coach for them all to eat pasta and lean fish, a couple of trays of chips and hot dogs later we went into our must win decider against Wirral and came up short by 6 tries to 1 , Luke Taylor getting our consolation try. This match just seemed one game too many and a few of the lads looked like the size of the pitch had got to them and tired legs ensued.
The day was extremely positive and I was particularly impressed with the ball handling skills of the boys. I could count on one hand the amount of dropped passes all day. Also it was great that ALL members of the squad played differing amounts on each game and had a chance to get the ball in their hands. Congratulations to all the squad:
Max Murphy; Ryan Prior; Owen Rylands; Jacob Kirkham; Sam Thomas; Harry Hall; Alfie Brown; Rhys Hulse; Tom Mcarthen; Matthew Vidler; Luke Taylor.
Many thanks also for all of the vocal support and encouragement.

Under 10’s Match Report ~ Sunday 9th away at Birkenhead Park
First game BHP 15-10 Parks Panthers / Second Game BHP 10- 0 Parks Pumas
Squad of 21 turned out, against BHP 10!
Parkonian Panthers and Pumas are both mixed ability teams with rolling subs so all get to participate. During both games against BHP it was clear our opposition had confidence in contact and a good understanding of running lines.
This put our teams under pressure from the whistle. However we demonstrated a much improved performance on the previous week.
We had players showing great evasion skills with Jenson Mackie and Sam Grundy dancing through for a try a piece and Kyron France demonstrating good skill in beating four defenders before being taken down.
On contested scrums we won against the head on numerous occasions especially by the Pumas front three (Matt, Will S and Harry) and saw great steels in the line out by Tom Bailey.
Best tackle was from Max Wharrie with a flattener to save a certain Try. Although Ryan Docherty did his best to stop a BHP attack................. with a Glenavon sliding tackle! Note to self ( the ref didn’t blow!)
Three players I must mention are:-
- Matt Burton for his fabulous communication influencing the team and losing his Bambi impression.
- George Beckett for staying focused and sheer step change in effort and then
- Sam Grundy for managing his temper during a very challenging few minutes.
We must work hard on:-
- Missed tackles and being too high to be effective -Remember No legs = No run
- Compete at the gain line. Why are we waiting? We must be quicker at kick off, Rucks and defence.
- Quicker hands and accurate passing.
- Aggression in the ruck and tackle! We are all too nice. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Good effort from all.
Tim
